Cayres, at the crossroads of trails
In the heart of the Velay, the village of Cayres sits where three great hiking routes meet, just minutes from Lac du Bouchet. Here is where to stay.
Cayres is no ordinary village for walkers: several long-distance hiking trails run right past it, making it a natural stopover between Le Puy-en-Velay, the Cévennes and the Gévaudan.
Many travellers passing through look for a hotel for the night. Cayres has none: here is what you will find instead, and how to plan your stopover.
A crossroads of several trails
The GR70, the Stevenson Trail, crosses the plateau a few kilometres from the village, on the route from Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille to the Cévennes.
The Via Podiensis (GR65), the Way of St James from Le Puy-en-Velay, also passes close by, and the ancient Régordane path, which historically links Le Puy to Alès, completes this network of routes that makes Cayres a place to pass through rather than a dead end.
No hotel in Cayres: our gîte as an alternative
The village has no hotel. To stay overnight, the go-to accommodation is the gîte “Comme à la Maison”, right in the village centre, Place de l'Église: three rooms, a shared kitchen and a shared lounge, suited to a single-night stopover as much as a longer stay.
We are not a hotel: no round-the-clock reception or on-site restaurant, but a personal welcome, a key box for late arrivals or early departures, and all the information you need for the rest of the trail.
Lac du Bouchet, just minutes away
About 5 km away, Lac du Bouchet completes the stopover: a swim, an hour's walk around it, or simply a peaceful break before setting off again.
