Lac du Bouchet
A perfectly circular crater lake, nestled in the forest at 1,205 metres above sea level, one of the finest natural sites in the Haute-Loire.
Lac du Bouchet is a maar lake, an ancient volcanic crater formed about 80,000 years ago, now filled with water and surrounded by a dense forest of pines and firs. Its almost perfectly round shape and deep blue water make it a unique spot in the Auvergne.
Just a few minutes by car from the gîte, it is easy to explore over half a day or a full day, with family or friends. It is one of the great assets of our location in Cayres.
Swimming and beach
In summer, a developed beach allows swimming, supervised in high season. The water stays cool, as is often the case at altitude, but the shallow area near the shore is popular with families.
A picnic area and shady spots line the lake: the ideal place for a lunch break after a morning of hiking.
Fishing and water activities
The lake is renowned for trout, roach and perch fishing. A fishing licence is required; we can tell you where to get one.
Small boats (rowing boats, pedalos) can usually be hired in season for a quiet trip on the water. Petrol-engine boats are not allowed, which keeps the place peaceful.
The discovery trail
An easy path makes the full loop of the lake in about an hour of flat walking under the trees. Accessible to all, it offers lovely views over the water and panels explaining the volcanic formation of the site.
It is also a great spot for nature watching: birds, dragonflies and, at sunrise or sunset, magnificent light on the mirror of the lake.
